The reasons for the surge of older workers are complex, experts said, but one of the primary economic forces behind it is the growing fear among older Americans that they lack the means to support their retirement needs.

The Senior Community Service Employment Program is a federally funded employment program for low-income persons age 55 or older. The program provides part-time work experience in community service for up to two years, giving seniors valuable work experience as well as a supplement to their limited income. Workers are paid the State or Federal minimum wage, whichever is higher.

Trained volunteers will be available Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., starting Monday February 6, 2011 and continuing through Friday April 13, 2011.

Participants will need to bring a copy of their previous year’s return, all financial statements pertaining to tax year 2011 and their picture ID(s). For those filing joint returns, both clients must be present at the appointment. Returns are e-filed. No paper returns will be processed. Participants will receive a copy of their completed return.

The deadline to file taxes this year is April 17th, 2012.

Nursing homes are a highly regulated health care system which can often lead to confusion and frustration for family members and caregivers. With the knowledge and understanding provided by the website, caregivers can make knowledgeable decisions and better understand why things are done the way they are.

One particular section, Medications of Concern, should be of interest to all seniors because it lets them know of the many adverse situations that may occur from many of the most common drugs they take.

The Greensboro clinic, which is moving to the coliseum this year, annually draws thousands of people with dental needs. The group’s goal is to treat 1,000 of them this weekend. The volunteer dentists, dental assistants and hygienists are setting up 72 treatment chairs.

This weekend’s stop is one of 12 in North Carolina this year and is open to anyone in the state.

A 36-hour clinic in Charlotte recently provided care for 2,145 people, with an estimated value of $1.1 million.

What: Free dental clinic (first-come, first-served)
When: Doors open 6 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
Where: Greensboro Coliseum; expect long lines outside.

* Must be 18 and over with income 200 percent below federal poverty guidelines: $21,660 for singles; $29,340 for married couples; $44,100 for family of four.
* Proof of income required (such as): Guilford County Orange Card, 2010 tax return; W-2 form, 1099 form; four current pay stubs; 4506-T form if taxes not filed in 2010.
* Other income/award letters accepted: Social Security; child support; disability; unemployment; worker’s compensation; food stamps.

The Older American Act provides $1.6 billion annually for nutrition, job training and senior centers. These are the programs that often provide in-home aides, adult day care and specialized transportation.
