ACE Announces 5th Annual Winter Caregiver Retreat

Uncomfortable Visiting Someone with Dementia or Chronic Illness?

On December 20th from 9:00am-11:00am, the Adult Center for Enrichment will present Are you Uncomfortable Visiting a Family Member, Friend or Neighbor with Dementia or other Chronic Illness? Visiting a loved one or friend may cause uncertainty about what to expect and how to be supportive.

During this session, Anita Brock-Carter and Jodi Kolada, both with ACE, will offer suggestions on what to do while visiting as well as communication tips to help promote a successful time together. The session will be held at the Women’s Hospital Education Center, 801 Green Valley Road, Greensboro, NC 27408, Classrooms 1 & 2.

5th Annual Caregiver Camp

The 5th Annual Caregiver Camp will be held Thursday, November 14th from 8:30 am to 3:00pm in the Social Hall at Temple Emanuel, 1129 Jefferson Road, Greensboro.

This day for caregivers to connect with one another and re-energize is offered at no charge with donations gratefully accepted. A light breakfast and lunch will be served.

Elder Law Clinic students from the Elon University School of Law will provide information about these key legal documents you need to know about as a family caregiver. Students will be presenting under the supervision of Hannah Vaughan, Practitioner-in-Residence at the Elder Law Clinic.

Anticipatory Grief and Caregiving
Thursday, October 24th, from 10:30a-12pm

During this session, Marcia Patterson Vanard, LCSW and Director of the Counseling and Education Center at Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, will help caregivers recognize and cope with anticipatory grief. This refers to a reaction that occurs before an impending loss.

ResFit Club Offers Exercise and Respite for Caregivers

The ResFit Club is a new program designed to provide caregivers temporary respite from their care giving duties. The ResFit Club will be offered at the Greensboro Sportsplex on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:30am-12:30pm. The club provides participants and those with the desire to gain morning access to the facility with the opportunity to partake in recreational and fitness activities to promote health and wellness patterns. Activities offered through the program include: Zumba and AHOY (Adding Health to Your Years) classes, wellness seminars, open play basketball, and our NEW! Healthy Paths walking club. The walking club will provide the opportunity for participants to partake in a self led walking experience with the opportunity to complete daily goals in route to securing prizes. Examples of goals that may be offered include: 10,000 steps per visit, 5 miles per day, walking to Raleigh among others. Prizes will include water bottles, t-shirts, gift-cards and more! Additional details will be provided in the coming days.

How to join, you ask? Getting access to the program and its many amenities is simple. You can gain access to the program by acquiring a membership access card. There are three levels of membership: Prime, Platinum and Gold. Below you can find a description of what each membership will entitle you to.

ResFit Club Prime Member

This card is for members of the ResFit Club exclusively at the Greensboro Sportsplex. An individual has to be the caregiver of some-one receiving respite care on-site. Members have access to all amenities throughout the program.

ResFit Club Platinum Member

This card is for individuals that are members of respite care at other sites offered by ACE. This card is valid for classes, seminars and other recreational activities during program hours.

ResFit Club Gold Member

This card is for individuals only interested in gaining access to  the ResFit Club fitness and recreational activities at the Greensboro Sportsplex. These members DO NOT have access to respite care at any of the ACE sites.

To become a ResFit Club Prime or Resfit Club Platinum member you must contact Anita Brock-Carter at 336– 274-3559 or acarter@acecare.org.

To become a Resfit Club Gold member you must purchase a 10 or 25 punch access card from the Greensboro Sportsplex.  The cost of the membership cards are $10 for a 10 visits or $25 for a 25 visit access card. The cards can be purchased the first day you arrive for the program or from 3:00pm-10:00pm Monday– Friday at the Greensboro Sportsplex. Each day that you participant in the program one visit will be deduced from your punch card. Once your punches are gone you must purchase an additional card to continue your access to the facility. Cards can be purchased the first day you arrive for the program or from 3:00 pm – 10:00 pm, Monday-Friday at the Greensboro Sportsplex.

Access to the ResFit Club will be free until October 15th, 2013. At that time we will begin actively monitoring and utilizing membership cards. You may purchase cards at this time or you are more than welcome to purchase them on this date.

Healthy Paths Walking Club

Meditation and Breathing Techniques to Help Reduce Caregiver Stress

ACE LOGO 2On Tuesday, August 27th from 6:00 pm – 7:15 pm, the Adult Center for Enrichment in partnership with Options for Senior America will offer “Meditation and Breathing Techniques to help Reduce Caregiver Stress!”

 

Family caregivers are often so busy caring for others, they tend to ignore their own personal needs. Join us as Joni Merrill, Registered Yoga Teacher and Community Relations Director with Options for Senior America, will demonstrate relaxation techniques to help reduce everyday stress and enhance your mood and energy!

The session will be held at ACE at Bardolph, 301 E. Washington Street, Ste 111, Greensboro, NC 27401. This session is offered at NO charge with contributions graciously accepted.
